26-year-old Tania Shergill of the Corps of Signals, the fourth generation to serve the Army is all set to become the first woman Parade Adjutant on Republic Day. A parade adjutant is responsible for the parade.
Trained at the Officer Training Academy (OTA), Chennai, Shergill is an electronics and communications graduate. Her father, grandfather, and great-grandfather have also served in the Army.
The Hoshiarpur-born said, “I had applied while I was in the final year of my engineering course and later got selected. After my training at OTA, I got commissioned into the Corps of Signals in 2017. When the selection was on for the Parade Adjutant, I knew that if I would get selected, I would be the first woman to do that job in the parade’s history.”
She further added, her great-grandfather was part of the Sikh Regiment.” My maternal grandfather also belonged to the same regiment, while my paternal grandfather belonged to the 14th Armoured Regiment (Scinde Horse) and my father served in the artillery regiment. Army life runs in the family.”
The Punjab-born did her schooling in multiple cities and counts photography, travelling and music among her hobbies.
Shergill also became the first woman to command the all men contingent on the 72nd Army Day Parade.

The Republic Day parade will witness Infantry Combat Vehicle BMP-2K of the 18 Mechanised Infantry, Dhanush Gun System and the Army Air Defence on the Rajpath. Contingents of the Corps of Signals, Sikh Light Infantry, Kumaon Regiment, the Grenadiers, the Parachute Regiment will also take part in the parade.
In last year’s Republic Day parade, Captain Bhavna Kasturi was the first woman officer to lead an all-men contingent.
