The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) for entry to national law schools has been rescheduled to June 13 because the Central Board of Secondary Examinations (CBSE) has been scheduled in May.
The Consortium of National Law Universities that conducts the entrance examination had earlier announced that the CLAT 2021 would be held on May 9.
The executive committee of the consortium met on Wednesday and discussed for several hours the difficulties the candidates would face if the CLAT was held during the CBSE Class X and XII board examinations.
Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal had announced last week that the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will conduct Classes X and XII exams from May 4 to June 10.
A notification issued by the consortium today said: “The Executive Committee of the Consortium of Law Universities met on January 6, 2021, to consider rescheduling the date of the CLAT 2021 exam due to clashes with the CBSE Board examinations schedule announced last week. The date for CLAT 2021 has been rescheduled to Sunday, the 13th June, 2021 from 2.00 PM to 4. 00 PM.”
The CLAT is conducted to admit students to 22 national law universities across India.
Nearly 73,000 candidates had enrolled for appearing in CLAT last year.
A large number of Class XII CBSE students apply for the CLAT every year, N K Chakrabarti,vice-chancellor of National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) ,Kolkata said. NUJS is one among the 22 national law universities that admit students through CLAT.
“The CLAT date had to be deferred till June 13. A considerable number of CLAT applicants come from the CBSE curriculum. The CBSE exams will be held in May . Students from CBSE would have been inconvenienced to a great extent if the CLAT was held in May,” Chakrabarti told EducationWorld.
Around 60,00 candidates out of the total 73,000 enrolled had written the CLAT 2020 . Students had to write the test online sitting at various centres. Many students did not turn up at the examination because of Covid-19, Chakrabarti said.
