All students who were enrolled for the West Bengal 2021 Madhyamik have passed the Class X examination, the results of which were declared on Tuesday.
As many as 10,79,749 candidates had been registered for the test this time and all of them have been declared successful, Kalyanmoy Ganguly, president West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) said announcing the results.
This is the first time the board has recorded 100 per cent pass percentage, the board president said.
A total number of 79 students stood first in the exam this year, which was also never recorded before in the history of the board. The 79 students who have been placed in the top rank have scored 697 out of 700 total marks. Last year, the student who had topped the exam had scored 694.
The pass percentage recorded in the 2020 Madhyamik was 86.34 per cent which the board president had said was highest ever at that time. In 2019 the pass percentage of the state Madhyamik exam was 86.07 per cent.
This year more than 90 per cent students have scored above 60 per cent marks, Ganguly said. This trend was also not noticed in the previous years.
There is an old complaint against the Bengal secondary board that it is stingy with marks. As a result students would often suffer when they would have to compete with their counterparts from other boards.
Teachers of several schools welcomed the boost in the pass percentage and the rise in the number of high scorers.
Several teachers, however, reminded that this is the first time the board exams were not held and the results were prepared on the basis of students’ performance in internal exams. The 2020 Madhyamik were already held by the time the lockdown had started due to Covid-19 in March.
This year the board did not publish a merit list of students as no exam was held. The exam was cancelled in view of the pandemic.
“ …For the first time in the history of WBBSE, the Board was compelled under exceptional circumstances to cancel the Examination of 2021 and compute results based on past performance of students…..Since no examination could be conducted in the year 2020 except the Internal Formative Evaluation, the Board decided to compute results giving equal weightage to the IFE and the final examination of class IX held in December 2019. In our estimation, this will do justice to all the students enrolled for this year’s examination. The meritorious students will score quite high based on their past performance,” the board president said.
After announcing the results in the morning the board distributed the mark sheets of students to the respective schools from where they were collected by parents. Students were asked not to come to the schools to collect the mark sheets for their safety.
The board has also kept the option for students who are dissatisfied with the result to appear in an offline exam which will be held when the situation becomes conducive. The marks that have been awarded to students who chose to take the offline exam will be cancelled and they will be issued a fresh mark sheet with marks they score in the said test which will be final.
