Starting this Independence Day, National Independent Schools Alliance (NISA), platform that brings together budget private schools (BPS) from across the country, is organising a three-week long Siksha Daan Utsav which will be a grand re-opening of the Education System.
Arrangements will be made during this time for free Covid vaccination, assessment of learning losses and remedial learning solutions for the huge gap that has been caused due to the Education crisis.
National Education Policy 2020 has envisioned to make India, a knowledge super power. As we begin the month of August, India’s students step into their 17th month of undergoing online classes. The pandemic has shriveled and shrunken everyone and the constantly mutating deadly virus has prevented school managements and governments to think of re-opening schools. This one and half year long interruption to educational activities has resulted into huge learning deficit among students.
“During this period, we must assess the nature and extent of learning deficit. We should ensure that the learning deficit gets covered before the classes begin in regular fashion. The culmination of ‘Siksha Daan Utsav’ will be with celebration of ‘Teachers Day’ on September 5,” said Bharat Malik, founder member, NISA.

It is very important that schools re-open soon as the students are missing an overall development, feels NISA. The UNESCO has estimated that every month away from school results in a learning loss of two months. The last 17 months have set children back by almost 34 months. An Asian Development Bank analysis has pointed out that every year of schooling lost is equivalent to 9.7% less earning in the future. It is very important that students get a platform to make up for the educational deficit before they physically begin the classes after their schools re-open.
Many states have already reopened their schools in phases and some are yet to open. A study by Azim Premji Foundation amongst 16,000 students in five states in age group six to 11 found that 92% lost one specific language ability and 82% lost some mathematical ability.
