Karnataka’s minister for higher education, Dr C N Ashwath Narayan said that he would stand by the Karnataka Examinations Authority’s (KEA) stand regarding awarding ranks to repeater students of the Karnataka Common Entrance Test (KCET)
Following an outcry by students, minister for higher education Dr CN Ashwath Narayan on Tuesday summoned KEA officials for a meeting.
Standing by the KEA’s decision to not consider the PU marks of 24,000 repeater candidates, Dr Narayan said that doing otherwise will be sheer injustice to over 3 lakh plus freshers.
The meeting saw participation of KEA executive director Rashmi Mahesh and commissioner of the department of technical education P Pradeep.
Narayan clarified that of these students, there are 64 from ICSE and 600 from CBSE boards. Even they have been awarded ranks only based on their CET scores.
“We had a discussion on how these students can be supported. In any case, it will be unfair for those who wrote CET this year. There will be a very huge difference for in ranks for the other candidates. Hence we stand by what the KEA has decided,” he said in an official statement.
The issue was placed even before chief minister Basavaraj Bommai for discussion. “There is no need for students to fear. There are plenty of seats available and a range of courses to opt from,” Narayan said.
