Five school buses in Bengaluru have now been transformed into temporary oxygen facility for Covid patients as Karnataka battles the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Private schools in the city have been doing their bit to help patients looking for isolation centres or oxygen beds. Among them, the Greenwood High International School has recently provided five of its school buses to be converted into sophisticated buses with oxygen support.

This is being done in association with Maharaja Agrasen Hospital and each bus has been redesigned to accommodate 12 patients at a given time.

This move, the school believes can provide some respite in times of emergencies. Patients with a doctor’s prescription or a positive RTPCR report along with a copy of their Aadhar card cab avail the oxygen facility.

“We plan to see how this initiative goes for the next ten days and then we will scale up to 10 buses thereafter,” says Dr. Satish Kumar Jain of Maharaja Agrasen Hospital. Each patient will be able to use the oxygen for two hours and will also be given a free nasal cannula for the oxygen flow to be connected to the flow meter and regulator, added he.

The initiative was launched by R Ashoka, minister for revenue, Government of Karnataka. In an official communication on Thursday, Bijay Agarwal, chairman of Greenwood High International School said, “When Dr Satish Jain approached me with this idea, I was immediately keen to be a part of this very noble initiative. The first bus will hit the road today.”
