The Western Regional Office of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), celebrated its 76th Foundation Day in Mumbai by honouring a number of educational institutes for partnerships in consumer empowerment efforts and promotion of quality consciousness through Standards Clubs in their respective institutes.

 

The  educational institutes honoured include StJohn’s  Institute Of Pharmacy & Research, KK Wagh Arts, Commerce, Science & Computer Science College, KC College Of Engineering And Management Studies, Pillai  College Of Engineering And Technology and VPMK Arts, Commerce And Science College.

 

The National Standards Body also honoured Konkan Muslim Education Society’s GM Momin Women’s College, Bhiwandi  for being the first educational institute in India to be certified for Educations Organisations Management System as per IS/ISO 21001.

 

Momin College is a private institution affiliated to Mumbai University. Most of its students come from economically backward families and are first generation learners. The college offers a wide choice of undergraduate and postgraduate Courses and Doctoral programmes (Science stream) and also conducts Diploma, Certificate and skill oriented courses, in order to make the students financially independent.

 

Momin has 52 full time teachers out which 23 faculty members have doctorates, seven staffers  are research guides, and 10 faculties have MPhil.

 

Nishat S Haque, Deputy Director General, BIS – Western Region,  Sanjay Vij, Director, Mumbai Branch Office I & II and A P Dwivedi, Director, BIS Western Regional Laboratory chaired a conclave organised as part of the 76th commemorative. A statutory body functioning under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India. BIS ensures quality certification of goods, services, processes etc. against these Standards through Standard Marks. 

 

Through Standards Clubs in colleges, BIS aims to expose science students of class 9th and above to the concepts of Quality and Standardization through student centric activities. BIS has till date established over 4000 Standards Clubs across India,  the target has been enhanced to creating 10,000 clubs by the end of 2023.

 

At the BIS celebrations in Delhi, Union Minister for Commerce, Consumer Affairs & Food & Public Distribution, Piyush Goyal said that there may be a large number of retirees who still “desire to work and participate in the growth  of the country.” ANI agency said Goyal asked BIS to explore if a database of such individuals could be built  by connecting with alumni associations, organisations, and companies.

 

Goyal also suggested that an outreach/ awareness program could be initiated by BIS wherein the retirees could engage through online/offline/hybrid mode with students in schools/ colleges/ universities to mould quality conscious students. He requested  BIS to draw up a plan to execute this program with the aim of creating quality consciousness in the country.
