City’s five academic schools, sited in the heart of London, offer students opportunities to avail internships and study abroad options

Sited in the heart of UK’s administrative capital, City, University of London (aka City) is a top-ranked public higher education institution focused on training students for “business and the professions”. The university’s five academic schools — arts and social sciences, Cass Business School, health sciences, City Law School and mathematics, computer science and engineering — offer undergraduate and postgrad programmes to 18,997 students. The Guardian University Guide 2017 ranks City #18 in the UK while the Times Higher Education ranks it #27 in its ‘Table of Tables’. 

Moreover, the Financial Times European Business School Rankings 2015 rated the Sir John Cass Business School among the top six B-schools in the UK and #21 in Europe. The distinguishing feature of City’s study programmes is that they have been developed in close collaboration with industry, and offer students opportunities to easily avail clinical placement/internships and study abroad options.

The varsity traces its history to 1894 when the Northampton Institute was founded. The institute morphed into City University London in 1966, after grant of a Royal Charter. In 2001, the Inns of Court School of Law was amalgamated with City, and is now known as the City Law School. And last year, City was admitted as an affiliate of the University of London. 

London. Europe’s most populous (8.7 million) metropolis with a business, cultural and academic heritage spanning centuries, London is an education in itself. A global centre of finance, law, fashion, design, media and communications, it’s also one of the world’s most respected cultural capitals.

City is sited in the heart of London within easy reach of several underground stations and just a few stops from the British Library and the West End, and minutes away from the Square Mile — London’s globally-famous financial district which hosts financial and professional institutions, major arts complexes and media offices, teaching hospitals and specialist medical research centres. London offers students numerous opportunities to network with globally respected companies and employers as interns and trainees. There are also many part-time work opportunities for students who need to work while studying (international students are permitted to work 10-20 hours per week during term and full-time during vacations).

Campus facilities. City’s campuses are spread across London. The main campus which includes the Cass School of Business, is sited in Northampton Square in Islington while the City Law School (incorporating the Inns of Court School of Law) is in Holborn contiguous with the four Inns of Court. Given its focus on training students for business and the professions, City offers state-of-the-art facilities for academic and experiential learning. 

The university’s library system comprises the main Northampton Square Library and specialist libraries of the Cass and the City Law schools. Moreover, City’s affiliation with the University of London gives students access to a range of other libraries, including the Senate House Library.

For leisure and sports, the university offers CitySport, the largest students sports complex in central London. It hosts 100 stations of gym equipment spread over two floors; purpose-built studios for mind and body classes, indoor studio cycling, martial arts and team sports, and Saddlers Sports Hall — an Olympic-standard space for basketball, badminton, five-a-side football, volleyball, cricket nets, netball and other court sports. Other campus facilities include coffee shops and sandwich bars, the student refectory and students union bar.

Admission. Applications for admission into City’s undergrad programmes must be made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). The UCAS code for City, University of London is C60. The eligibility criterion for entry into undergrad programmes is successful completion of class XII (A levels, IB diploma and “Indian Year XII — some boards”) and English language proficiency — a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 for general courses, 6.5 for business and 7.0 for journalism and law courses is required. The admission deadline for entry into the term beginning September 2018 is January 15, 2018. 

For entry into postgraduate courses, a bachelor’s degree and English language proficiency are mandatory requirements. Applications for admission into postgrad courses must be made directly to the university.

Accommodation. City offers a range of modern and newly refurbished halls of residence a short walk from the main university buildings. They include Liberty Court (291 furnished single rooms arranged in self-contained cluster flats); Liberty Hall (single en-suite rooms with shared kitchens and common areas); East Central House (single en-suite rooms in cluster flats), and Tufnell House (en-suite rooms). All university accommodation offers access to kitchens and is self-catered. The university’s Student Centre also helps students find private housing.

Degree programmes. The university’s five academic schools offer a long menu of professional undergraduate and postgraduate programmes (see box).
