Graduate Record Examinations (GRE)

Administered by Educational Testing Services (ETS) — the world’s largest private nonprofit educational testing and assessment organisation headquartered in New Jersey (USA) — Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is a globally accepted entrance exam. Prospective applicants from around the world who are interested in pursuing a postgraduate programme in universities abroad take the GRE Test.

GRE scores are accepted by colleges and universities in over 160 countries across the globe. The exam evaluates candidates on their readiness for postgraduate level education. There are two types of GRE tests – General Test and Subjects. ETS conducts GRE in over 1000 centres across more than 160 countries worldwide.

Eligibility

The ETS GRE eligibility depends on the GRE exam opted for by the students and the course applying for. All the participating institutes that accept GRE scores have their own eligibility criteria.

GRE requirements include the documentation required to register and take the test. The requirements of GRE exam are not the same as eligibility criteria for ETS GRE since GRE eligibility is specified by the university or the course applying for.

GRE exam eligibility criteria is separate from the admission criteria with ETS having no bearing on the admission criteria. GRE admission criteria pertains to the scores obtained in the GRE General Test for applying to master’s, specialised master’s in business, MBA, J.D. or doctoral degree in the various GRE participating institutes.

ETS GRE scores are used to supplement the undergraduate records, recommendation letters and other qualifications for graduate-level study.

GRE General Test Exam Pattern

The GRE General exam comprises three sections:

Verbal Reasoning
Quantitative Reasoning
Analytical Writing Assessment

The Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections which appear alternately in the exam include multiple-choice questions with one correct answer and multiple-choice questions with more than one correct answer respectively. The Analytical Writing Assessment comprises two essay tasks. There is no negative marking in the GRE exam. Apart from the three scored GRE sections, ETS provides an unscored section for research purposes. The unscored section is either Quantitative or Verbal Reasoning. The candidates will not know which section is unscored prior to or after the exam.

GRE 2022 Registration

Before filling the GRE registration form, candidates should refer the following ETS GRE checklist.

Note down the GRE registration fee that needs to be paid.
Understand the ID requirements for registration of GRE.
Check the seat availability for preferred location and test dates.
Schedule the GRE test such that there is ample time to submit the GRE scores within the admission deadlines given by the respective institutes applying for.
Note the most up to date test centre details. This is due to the fact that some centres may not be available or open during the time a candidate may wish to appear for.
Use the option to sign up for the FREE GRE Search Service while registering for the GRE ^® General Test. This option can be availed any time from the respective ETS accounts.

The GRE 2022 result for the Quantitative and Verbal Reasoning sections is displayed on the computer screen of the candidate immediately after completion of the exam. This makes up the overall GRE General 2022 score of the candidate.
The score for the Analytical Writing Assessment section is available with the unofficial score report approximately 10-15 days after the test day.
The GRE Subject Test 2022 score reports are available to the candidates online approximately five weeks after the date of the test. Candidates will receive an email from ETS once the GRE Subject Test scores are available.

GRE General 2022 Scores

For GRE General Test, the Quantitative Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning sections are scored on a 130-170 point scale with one point increments. The total GRE General score is the sum of the Quantitative and Verbal Reasoning scores and is calculated on a 260-340 point scale.

If no questions are answered for a specific measure (e.g., Verbal Reasoning), then the candidate will receive a No Score (NS) for that measure.

The Analytical Writing Assessment scores are reported separately and are calculated on a 0-6 point scale with 0.5 point increments. The Analytical Writing Assessment score does not contribute to the total GRE General score.

GRE Subject Test 2022 Score

Each of the GRE Subject Tests 2022 is scored on a 200 to 990 point scale with increments of 10 points and the candidate’s raw score is determined by the number of questions he or she answers correctly.

GRE 2022 Participating institutes: To check the participating institute of GRE 2022 visit https://www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/scores/send/aidi_fellowships. Candidates can send the GRE scores to up to four recipients without paying anything extra. For more than four recipients, they are required to pay a fee.
