The interim order regarding adhering to uniform wherever prescribed applies to students only, the Karnataka High Court clarified on Wednesday.
The full bench of the High Court comprising Chief Justice, Justice Krishna S Dixit, and Justice Khaji Jaibunnesa Mohiyuddin is hearing a bunch of petitions filed by students, teachers, educational institutions, and other organizations regarding the hijab ban on campus.
It may be recollected that a video of one of the teachers in Mandya district removing burqa outside school campus and later entering premises was widely circulated on social media, drawing severe criticism from one section of people.
Advocate Mohammed Tahir, on the ninth day of the hearing of the matter in court said that several PU and degree colleges were expelling students for wearing Hijab despite not prescribing any uniform.
The interim order of the court had it that in educational institutions where College Development Authorities have prescribed uniforms, students will not be allowed to wear any attire with religious significance or carry flags.
Argument ensued pertaining to Bhandarkar College in Udupi where students were denied entry and the matter was placed before a single bench of the court. To this, the chief justice clarified that the order only applied to colleges which had previously prescribed uniforms.
Giving clarification to a question raised by advocate Tahir, the chief justice clarified that the interim order applied for students only.
