The commerce stream continues to be a popular choice amongst first year junior college (FYJC) students in the state. Of the 1, 85,473 student registrations on the online admission portal for the current academic year (2019-20) 1, 17,275 students have opted to study commerce.
The commerce stream has always had the highest number of seats reserved for it across colleges. This year there are 1,74,046 seats available for commerce; 1,02,409 seats available for science; 37,071 seats available for arts and 5660 seats available for students interested in taking up vocational courses.
According to education department officials, commerce remained the preferred option for students of all boards – the Secondary School Certificate (SSC), the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) board; Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE). A total of 1,09,463 SSC students, 2454 CBSE students, 3823 ICSE students and 364 IGCSE students opted for commerce this year.
This year 13000 seats across all streams were added in top-ranked colleges in Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur to ensure availability of higher number of seats to SSC students. The move aims to compensate SSC students who fared poorly as compared to their peers from other boards after the education department decided to scrap the 20 marks internal assessments project assignments in the languages and social sciences subjects. The change in the evaluation system was expected to end the possibility of grades inflation by state board schools while marking internal assessments of their students. However, with other boards retaining the benefits of internal assessments, SSC students were at a disadvantage resulting in the overall SSC pass percentage falling by 12.31 percent from 89.41 in 2017-18 to 77.04 percent in 2018-19. Expectedly, at 1, 68,991 registrations, the overall registrations by SSC students for the online FYJC admissions for the new academic session (2019-20) have dropped by 25,000 this year.
The Maharashtra state class 10 board examinations were held in March (1st– 22nd) this year with 17 lakh state students writing the papers.
