A week after the demise of its director Dr Vijay Kumar Williams to Covid-19, his dream to help patients in need has come to reality with the setting up of a Covid Centre on the Mount Carmel School in New Delhi.

Mount Carmel School has thrown open a part of its campus for setting up of a 100-bed centre on Monday. This is one of the first private schools in the country’s capital to take such an initiative.

However, unfortunately, even as it was the brainchild of 83-year-old Dr Williams did not live to see the centre is established and functional because of his demise due to Covid-19. The centre now bears his name on it.

The centre is now looking at support from both the churches in India for volunteers and also hoping for contributions from the international community. They have so far received oxygen concentrates from South Korea. Deputy Chief Minister, Manish Sisodia who visited the school appreciated the initiative. The Akshaya Patra Foundation will supply food for patients here.

A team of paramedics and medical professionals have been flown in from various parts of the country to attend to patients here. Those with mild symptoms or those who are asymptomatic can seek admission here. While 50 beds have been laid in the auditorium, 10 other classrooms with 5 beds in each room are also made available.

The facility is associated with Venkateswara Hospital in Dwarka and St Stephen’s Hospital in north Delhi to manage emergencies.
