In an effort to tackle the issue of declining attendance in government schools, the Uttar Pradesh government is set to introduce an online attendance system for students. The move follows the successful implementation of biometric attendance for teachers and staff in government schools.

The new online attendance system will provide schools with a dashboard to monitor attendance on a daily basis and take action to address frequent absenteeism. According to an official, the dashboard will also help in curbing dropout rates in government schools.

The secondary education minister, Gulab Devi, had previously mentioned about the online attendance system for students during a session in the state Assembly. The introduction of the online system is expected to provide a more efficient and accurate means of recording student attendance.

The state’s education department had earlier linked the attendance of staff, both teaching and non-teaching, as recorded by biometric scanners with their salary payment. With the online attendance system, schools will be able to effectively monitor attendance for both staff and students.

According to the Unified District Information System for Education 2021-22 data, secondary schools in Uttar Pradesh have a dropout rate of 9.7 percent. This dropout rate refers to the percentage of pupils enrolled in a given level at a given school year who are no longer enrolled at any grade in the following school year.

In addition, the transition rate from secondary to higher secondary schools in Uttar Pradesh is 80.4 percent. These statistics demonstrate the urgent need for measures to be put in place to address the issue of absenteeism and dropout rates in government schools.

The introduction of the online attendance system for students is a significant step towards improving the education system in Uttar Pradesh. The system will not only enable schools to monitor attendance more effectively but also enable the government to identify areas of concern and take remedial action to address the issue of absenteeism and dropout rates.
