A WhatsApp status celebrating Pakistan’s victory over India in the India-Pakistan T20 Worldcup match on Sunday has cost a teacher from the Neerja Modi School in Rajasthan her job.
Nafeesa Attari, a teacher from Neerja Modi School, a global institute in Udaipur run by the Sojatia Group was terminated from her job after the school after the parents’ community raised concerns over her WhatsApp status, citing that she sided with Pakistan.
Following the 10-wicket victory by Pakistan who achieved a target score of 152 with 13 balls to spare, Nafeesa uploaded a Whatsapp status with images of players of the Pakistani cricket team with a caption ‘We wonnn’.
When one of the parents of the school sought to know whether she was a supporter of Pakistan, the teacher replied with an affirmative ‘yes’. Screenshots of both these incidents, which were widely circulated on WhatsApp groups later, prompted the school to act on the incident.
The school, in an official termination letter on October 25, signed by the chairman said that after a meeting with the Sojatia Charitable Trust, the teacher has been expelled from the school.
Meanwhile, in unrelated incidents, several well-known personalities from across sectors on social media revved the discussion on celebrating Pakistan’s victory, but in the right spirit only supporting a good game and not the country.
Entrepreneur and political analyst, Tehseen Poonawala took to Twitter to say, “No not for #Pakistan. If u celebrate a #Pakistan victory over India, it hurts me. Appreciate the fact that they played well.. of course, #Pakistan played well. But to celebrate India’s defeat is UNACCEPTABLE! #IndiavsPak.”
Responding to the tweet, IAS officer Captain Manivannan P said, “I agree. Appreciating a good game is objective and I am also fine with it. But celebrating it is subjective and emotive. I can never celebrate anybody’s victory against an Indian team.”
