Raksha Bandhan, as we all know, celebrates the enduring bond between a brother and sister. As we celebrate the occasion on August 15 this year, we bring to you 10 movies from around the world that truly depicts the beautiful relationship shared by a brother and sister. 

Pahuna: The Little Visitors (2017)

Pahuna is a Nepali language Indian film set in Sikkim revolving around three siblings — a girl, a boy, and an infant. The trio gets separated from their parents during Maoists agitation in Nepal and flees to Sikkim. Available on Netflix India, the story shows about the little kids try to survive under extraordinary circumstances. The film got a Special Mention in The International Feature Film Category at SCHLINGEL International Children’s Film Festival in Germany.

Children of Heaven (1999)

Siblings Ali and Zahra make an intricate arrangement to conceal the loss of Zahra’s pair of shoes. However, when it becomes difficult to do so, Ali decides to participate in a race to win new shoes. The movie has been remade in Hindi titled Bumm Bumm Bole (2010) starring Darsheel Safary and Ziyah Vastani.

Homecoming (1996)

The movie follows the story of four siblings, aged between six and thirteen, who were abandoned by their mother in the parking lot of a shopping mall and are left to fend for themselves. They eventually meet their grandmother, a loner who is reluctant to take them in. It is based on the 1981 novel by American author Cynthia Voigt.

Dil Dhadakne Do (2015)

Dil Dhadakne Do explores the complicated side of relationships between a brother and sister. On the occasion of their parents 30th anniversary, Ayesha (played by Priyanka Chopra) and Kabir (portrayed by Ranveer Singh) go on a cruise tour with their parents, friends, and relatives. The story revolves around how the duo faces life-changing experiences during their time without affecting their bond.

Iqbal (2005)

Iqbal is a sports drama movie, which follows the story of two siblings, Iqbal and Khadija. Shweta Prasad, who plays Khadija shows unending support towards her brother Iqbal, (played by Shreyas Talpade, who is hard of hearing and speech) to achieve his dream of becoming a cricketer at all cost. The movie won the National Film Award for Best Film on Other Social Issues.

Spy Kids (2001)

This adventure comedy film follows secret agents Gregorio and Ingrid, who fall in love with each other and decide to raise a family. Later, they mysteriously disappear but the only people, who can rescue them are their kids. The movie has three sequels: The Island of Lost Dreams in 2002, Game Over in 2003, and All the Time in the World in 2011. An animated reboot series, Spy Kids: Mission Critical, premiered in 2018.

Mary Poppins Returns (2018)

Decades after her original visit, Mary Poppins, the magical nanny returns to help the three Banks siblings –  three children — Annabel, John, Georgie. She also helps them and their father Michael, come out through a difficult time in their lives.

Song of the Sea (2014)

An animated fantasy film following the story of a 10-year old Irish boy Ben (David Rawle) and his mute sister, Saoirse. The story unfolds when Ben discovers that Saoirse is a selkie (a mythological creature), who must find her voice and free supernatural creatures from the spell of a Celtic goddess. The movie was nominated for the Best Animated Feature Film at the 87th Academy Awards.

Sarbjit (2016)

Based on a real life story, it is an inspiring movie about how strong a sister’s love can be. It is about Sarbjit (Randeep Hooda), who accidentally crosses the Indo-Pak border in a drunken state and get arrested by the Pakistan army. It is how his sister, Dalbir, fights for him to get justice and prove his innocence. The story shows how sisters can be equally protective of their brothers.

Little Sister (2016)

Young nun Colleen (Addison Timlin) is avoiding all contact with her family until an email from her mother announces that her brother is home. Upon returning to her childhood home, she finds her old room exactly how she left it. Although her parents are happy to see her, unease and awkwardness abound, and her brother is living as a recluse in the guesthouse, who has been disfigured after returning from the Iraq War.
