With the number of Covid-19 cases increasing in the country, many states have decided not to detain students in till class 8.

In most states, no examinations will be held in the schools because of the disruption caused in imparting education because of the sudden spike in the number of Covid-19 cases. Schools have complained about difficulties in conducting regular online classes as many of their teachers and students have contracted the disease.

In view of this situation, several states have decided to promote each and every student enrolled till class 8 without any examination. In some states, students are to be assessed on project work, assignments and their overall performance throughout the year. But, no student will be detained, according to notices issued to the schools by several state governments.

All schools in the country had shut down in March last year as a preventive measure against the spread of Covid-19 and students were taught only through the online mode. In many states, the schools had started reopening from January. With the sudden spike in the number of Covid-19 cases, physical classes were suspended again. The list of states where students of junior classes have been granted promotion is as follows.

Karnataka: Students of classes 1 to 5 will be promoted automatically and students between 6 and 9 standards will be assessed on oral examinations instead of written tests. Private schools are holding exams and assessments online. 

Maharashtra: All students of classes 1 to 8 under the Maharashtra State Board schools to be granted promotion. Exams for classes 9 and 11 have also been cancelled.

Rajasthan: Students of classes 1 to 5 will be promoted on the basis of assessment done under its Social Media Interface for Learning Engagement (SMILE) programme. For classes 6, 7 ,9 and 11 the final exams will be held in April.   

Gujarat: All students of classes 1 to 5 will be promoted without examinations. Students of classes 6,7, 8, 9 and 11 will be promoted after clearing final examinations which will be held in April.

Odisha: The state mass education department has promoted all students of classes 1 to 8 to the next classes without examinations. 

Tamil Nadu: Students of classes 9, 10 and 11 will be promoted to the next class without any exams.

Puducherry: All students of classes 1 to 9 to be declared promoted to the next class.

Chattisgarh: Students of all classes will be promoted to the next class without exams except those in classes 10 and 12.

Assam: All students of classes 1 to 9 to be promoted to the next class without writing any examination

Madhya Pradesh: There will be no automatic promotion for students of classes 1 to 8. Students will be promoted to the next class based on their project work and performance in online classes. Students of classes 9, 10, 11 and 12 will have to appear for offline examinations.

Bihar: All students of classes 1 to 8 promoted without appearing in the annual examinations.

Jharkhand: All students up to class 8 in the state to be promoted to the next class, according to a recent order of the state government.

West Bengal: All students studying in state-aided schools have been promoted to the next class

Uttar Pradesh: State government announced promotion for all students of classes 1 to 8. A performance-based assessment will be done on April-end. But no student will be detained.  

Delhi: All students enrolled up to government schools shall be promoted to the next class, according to guidelines issued by the Directorate of Education. Schools asked to grade the students on the basis of projects and assignments.

Kerala: Students till class 8 promoted to the next class under the no-detention policy. It is likely to be the same for students in class IX too, according to latest reports.

Telengana: State government seriously considering proposal to promote all students till class 9 to higher classes without exams according to latest reports.

Andhra Pradesh: The state education department has cancelled final examinations for classes 6 to 9 and all students of these classes to be promoted automatically.

Himachal Pradesh: All government school students barring those in 10 and 12, have been promoted to the next class irrespective of their performance in the annual examinations.
